Ashton cited for hair pulling

England and Northampton Saints wing Chris Ashton has been cited for poor sportsmanship, after he pulled Leicester Tigers wing Alesana Tuilagi to the ground by his hair.

Ashton's hearing will be  for an act contrary to good sportsmanship (Law 10(4)(m), after pulling Tuilagi by his dreadlocks and dragging him off the field.

A brawl then broke out after the incident and both Tuilagi and Saints flank Tom Wood were shown red cards and will also attend the disciplinary hearing with charges of striking contrary to Law 10(4)(a).

Ashton's tackle went unpunished during the match, while Saints lock Courtney Lawes also appeared to have thrown a punch and has escaped a citing.

Manu Tuilagi, Alesana's brother, has also had a run-in with Ashton, when the two were involved in a punch-up at the end of last season. The pair are England teammates and will need to bury the hatchet at some point, after Manu had to be stopped from leaving the dug-out and joining the fray in his brother's defence last weekend.

Another Saints player, Phil Dowson, will also attend the hearing after he was cited in Northampton's previous match against Saracens for a dangerous tackle on Alex Goode.

The hearings for Ashton, Wood, Tuilagi and Dowson will take place on Tuesday and be assessed by an RFU disciplinary panel chaired by Judge Jeff Blackett.
