Drunken Danny pledges to take Care

England and Harlequins scrumhalf Danny Care has had to apologise after being arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour following his side's first loss of the season at the hands of French giants Toulouse on Friday.

The 24-year-old, who missed England's controversial World Cup campaign through injury, was arrested at 3am on Saturday and spent two hours in a police cell before being released after he paid a £80 fixed penalty notice.

The 21-10 European loss at the Stoop was Harlequins' first defeat in 15 games this season - a hot streak which has seen them open up a healthy lead at the top of the Premiership table.

Police had been called to the Noir Bar in Weybridge to investigate an unconnected disturbance but the 24-cap Test scrumhalf was the only person detained.

"Officers attended the scene and ensured those present were dispersed," a police spokesman told the Daily Telegraph. "A man in his twenties was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. He was arrested and later issued with a fixed penalty notice."

This comes hot on the heels of England's World Cup campaign which was marred by numerous off-field incidents largely stemming from the drinking culture within the camp.

Harlequins have released a statement explaining that the matter will be dealt with internally, but Care was quick to apologise and take responsibility for his actions, recognising that his behaviour was not good enough for a professional sportsman.

"It was a silly thing to do, I accept that and apologise completely," he said.

"It was a tough game and I was out with the team and friends but should have remembered that as a professional player I am on duty throughout the season and need to set a better example to the fans," added Care.
