Warriors rocked by Taylor injury blow

Worcester Warriors were dealt another cruel back row injury blow as new signing Ezra Taylor suffered a serious injury just two minutes into his club debut.

Samoa international Taylor only arrived at Sixways before Christmas and was handed his full debut at Adams Park in the Premiership against London Wasps on New Year's Day.

However, in only the second minute of the league clash the No.8 crashed to the turf following a line-out and was duly stretchered off.

Head coach Richard Hill revealed early indications were that Taylor would now face an extended spell on the sidelines and join Kai Horstmann, Adam Balding and Neil Best on the painful back row injury list.

"The bad luck continues with the back row," admitted Hill.

"We think he has snapped a patella tendon which doesn't sound nice and isn't - that is probably his season over.

"Two minutes into his Worcester career and it's gone. I am bitterly disappointed for him.

"It was a blow for us because the first carry he did well. He was in the side to do some damage and carry some ball. But after two minutes we had to replace him.

"Matt Kvesic did very well when we moved him to No.8," he added.

"The argument was there to put Chris Jones back to No.8 and bring Ben Gulliver on, but it was a bit early to change that second row combination.

"We moved Matt to eight and with Sam Betty, Jake Abbott we had three sevens playing in the back row. It was a good effort from them, but we could have done with more artillery."

* Despite the setback Hill could not hide his delight at a 'huge result' as Worcester Warriors produced a battling display to defeat London Wasps 6-0 in the Premiership at Adams Park.

Two penalties from Joe Carlisle proved the difference in atrocious conditions in High Wycombe as Warriors produced a tactical masterclass in the wet and windy weather.

The result was the first success on the road in the top-flight for Warriors since defeating Gloucester back in April 2009 - and also equalled the lowest ever points scored in an Aviva Premiership.

Crucially, it meant that Warriors leapfrogged Wasps in the standings and gave Hill plenty of positives as the Warriors kicked off a new calendar year in the right fashion.

"The year 2012 has started superbly - I can't hide my pleasure," said Hill. "Both teams were desperate to get the New Year off to a winning start and that result is perfect for us.

"We showed good control, we played the conditions very well and there is a huge will to win from the team.

"We hadn't got an away win all season - I can't remember the last time Worcester won away in the Aviva Premiership - so that is a big one for us.

"That is a huge result for us and gives us a cushion between ourselves and Newcastle.

"We were not too displeased to see the rain come down," he added. "I think Wasps have the most potent three quarter line in the Premiership and on a dry day they can cut you to ribbons.

"We had to get our tactics right and we knew their back three did not have a kicking game having lost Huge Southwell. Our tactics were to put the ball in behind them and ask them to play.

"We edged the kicking battle and territory. It came down to some solid set piece and although our scrum was struggling first 20 minutes, I had to make a tactical change, we got better and relied on our defence.

"Wasps attacked from deep and threatened on the counter, but it wasn't really the day to go 80 metres and score - not with a defence like ours."
