Andy Farrell has shocked English Premiership side Saracens with his resignation that could put the coach in pole position to join the England staff full time.

Farrell was part of the England coaching staff during the Six Nations campaign under Stuart Lancaster, who was still caretaker manager at the time.

Following a successful campaign Lancaster was awarded with the England coaching job on a permanent basis, but Farrell ruled out staying on in favour of keeping his job at Saracens.

Farrell appeared happy at Sarries and planning to continue to learn and grow with the club, which opened the door for Mike Catt to join the England coaching staff.

The latest development will spark speculation regarding where Farrell will go next and a return to the English setup might not be  out of the question.

Saracens have appointed Kevin Sorrell as Farrell's replacement as the team's backline coach.

Mark McCall, director of rugby, said: "Kevin is making a swift and successful transition from outstanding player to outstanding coach. He is Saracens through and through, and we are delighted he has agreed to take up this important post."

While the chairman Nigel Wray added: "We are sorry to see Andy leave, and wish him well in the future."
