Diamond: Looking south

Sharks director of rugby Steve Diamond has said he is looking to sign a "couple of props" as the English club try to lift themselves off the foot of the Premiership table.

Sale have yet to win a game in six Premiership starts and have struggled at scrum time all season.

Henry Thomas and Alasdair Dickinson are out of action with long-term injuries meaning Eifion Lewis-Roberts and Tony Buckley have been dealing with a huge workload. The solution may lie in South Africa.

"We are looking at a couple of props at the moment," Diamond told the Manchester Evening News.

"Because of the way the market is here we are looking abroad and we hope to have something sorted in the next few weeks.

"What we are after is top-drawer players in terms of strengthening our front row and hopefully we can bring in both a really quality tight head and a loose head. We just need a bit of beef and ballast in our scrum but we are after quality not quantity.

"In terms of other positions, though we have had injuries I'm happy that we've got strength in depth there."
