New Italian side to join Pro 12

The Italian rugby union federation (FIR) has rejected a bid by Viadana to become the country's second team in the Pro 12 next season, instead announcing plans to launch its own franchise.

Treviso and Aironi have spent the last two seasons playing in the league that also includes teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

But Aironi, formed from the merger between a number of historic Italian clubs including Viadana and Parma, have pulled out of next season's competition on financial grounds.

And the Italian federation ruled on Monday that Viadana's candidacy had been rejected because of its questionable economic viability and that a franchise completely under FIR's own control would replace Aironi.
