Big guns all start strong in Dubai

The second round of the Sevens World Series got underway as Wales snatched a late 14-7 victory against Scotland and Australia beat Canada 40-7.

Andrew Turnbull scored the first try of the tournament, but Tom Prydie and Will Price ensured victory for Paul John's side whilst Lewis Holland scored the first hat-trick of the weekend for Australia.

Fiji's Cup victory in Australia last weekend means they are the team to beat at the top of the standings, and they got their campaign off to a flying start, beating Argentina 40-7 including 26 second-half points.

New Zealand defeated USA 40-0 in their first match on day one, South Africa proved too strong for Portugal in their 17-5 victory, two Renaud Delmas tries secured a victory for France over Kenya and defending champions England beat Zimbabwe 43-0.

The UAE ran out for their first ever Sevens World Series match against Samoa which they lost 55-12 as Tom Iosefo, Paul Perez and Faalemiga Selesele scored twice each for Stephen Betham's men. The biggest cheer of the match however came for Emad Reyal who scored both of UAE's tries in the match.

Pool A:

Gold Coast Sevens winners Fiji got their campaign off to a flying start, beating Los Pumas 40-7 thanks to 26 second-half points and two tries from Joeli Lutumailagi.

2009/10 Series champions Samoa defeated the hosts on the 40th anniversary of the UAE, as Tom Iosefo, Paul Perez and Faalemiga Selesele all scored twice in the 55-12 victory. Emad Reyal received the biggest cheer, however, as he scored both of UAE's tries.

The UAE now face matches against Fiji and last weekend's Bowl winners Argentina under the guidance of head coach Wayne Marsters.

Pool B:

Defending Series champions New Zealand will be looking to recover from their Cup final defeat to Fiji in Dubai and got off to a strong start, beating 40-0.

Tomasi Cama and Frank Halai scored twice, and there were a further four different scorers for Gordon Tietjens' side.

The USA face South Africa next, but have never beaten South Africa in 18 meetings. They came close last weekend in Australia, losing 17-12 in the pool stages, and will be hoping to build on that performance in their second pool match here in Dubai.

Last year Portugal stunned England on day one but lost to South Africa in their first match at the Sevens this year. Bernado Botha, captain Kyle Brown and William Small-Smith scored for Paul Treu's side before Frederico Oliveira added a consolation try for Portugal.

Defending Dubai Sevens champions England began the defence of their campaign by beating Zimbabwe 43-0 thanks to two Dan Norton tries and one for debutant Christian Lewis-Pratt.

France, who reached last weekend's Cup quarterfinals will be looking for a similar performance in Dubai, and  were able to get off to a positive start, beating Kenya 27-5 thanks to two tries from Renaud Delmas.

France and England bring pool proceedings to a close on day one in the final men's match with Ben Ryan's side having won 25 of the 31 meetings between the two sides.

Reigning World Cup Sevens champions Wales got off to a winning start as Tom Prydie and Will Price's late effort helped Paul John's side to a 14-7 victory after Andrew Turnbull had scored the first try of the tournament.

Lewis Holland crossed for a hat-trick in Australia's first match as they defeated Pan American Games champions Canada 40-7.

Wales reached the Cup quarterfinals last weekend, impressively beating England on day one, and went on to win the Plate which also included a victory over Samoa, and they now face matches against Canada and Australia.
