Force see positives in defeat

The Western Force will not read too much into the final scoreline in their opening trial match of the 2012 season.

The Perth side fell 0-25 to the Brumbies in Darwin, but the lopsided scoreline didn't reflect exactly of the performances of either side.

Most notably the Western Force decided against cheap points when awarded penalties within scoring distance and instead opted to play as much as rugby possible.

Coach Richard Graham said they will use the hit-out to further refine their preparations for the opening round of the Super Rugby campaign at the end of the month.

While the Western Force were without a host of stars including Wallabies quartet David Pocock, Nathan Sharpe, Richard Brown and Cameron Shepherd, the 27 man squad was well prepared for the encounter but couldn't make the most of the times they had ball in hand.

"[The Brumbies] physicality was very good," Graham said.

"They defended well and worked the tackle. You could see a strong South African influence - their forwards were very direct, very aggressive," he said of their World Cup-winning former Springbok coach Jake White.

"The result was not necessarily important to us - we want to win, but the whole reason we came here was to play as much rugby as we possibly could," added Graham.

"[We wanted to] put our set piece under pressure and then see how we attack and defend off the back of it.

"I was very happy with our young back row."
