Queensland Reds backs Mike Harris and Ben Lucas will share playmaking duties in Saturday's trial match against the Brumbies in Cairns with both players being given an opportunity to wear the No.10 jersey.
The Reds boss pointed out that he would use the match to take a look at far more than just the battle for the flyhalf spot, with a number of players set to get their opportunity to stake their claim for a permanent spot in the starting line-up.
“"It isn't just about the battle for the flyhalf position, we're excited to see how a number of players will step up in our two trials. Since I've been here we've never enjoyed more depth within our squad than now so performance is going to be a huge factor on who is selected for round one.
"We travel to Sydney to play the Waratahs in just over a fortnight so it's now up to the entire squad to see what they make of the opportunities they will be given," he said.
Meanwhile young lock David McDuling will miss the Reds' 2012 campaign with a torn ACL. McDuling will undergo surgery next week with the rehabilitation process set to rule him out of the Super Rugby season.
"Dave was one of a number of young men really impressing coaches during the pre-season and it's devastating to see this sort of injury knowing how much hard work he has put in," McKenzie said.
"We believe he is a player of the future and are looking forward to seeing him back at full strength and making the impact we know he can next year."
