Turner blow for the Tahs

The Waratahs have lost their most potent strike weapon, wing Lachie Turner, for the entire Super Rugby campaign.

Turner sustained a hamstring injury in last Friday's 13-try, 83-5 rout of a Samoan selection at Tamworth.

"MRI scans on Saturday revealed extensive tendon damage and as a result, he will undergo surgery this Wednesday to repair or reattach the tendon, depending on the extent of the damage," the Tahs said in a statement.

"It is anticipated that he will be out of action for at least six months. A further update will be made after surgery."

The lightning-fast wing was in great form last year and was well positioned to have his best season yet for both the Waratahs and the Wallabies.

While there remains faint hope that he could feature in the Super Rugby play-offs in August, should the Waratahs reach the knock-out stages, he is definitely out of Australia's mid-year Tests against Scotland and Wales.

It would also be tough for him to make the Wallaby side for the new Rugby Championship - the four-nation tournament between Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina - in August and October.

Turner is not the only Tahs player in the injury list.

Others include veteran lock Dan Vickerman (shoulder, expected to return April), Sitaleki Timani (Japan, March), captain Rocky Elsom (hamstring, early March), Drew Mitchell (ankle, Reds match in Round One) and Atieli Pakalani (shoulder, Reds match).

The good news is that burly No.8 Wycliff Palu (hamstring) and prop Benn Robinson (knee) will be available for selection for the Waratahs' final pre-season hit-out against Tonga in Sydney on Friday.
