March 9: England’s Johnson Born

Rugby Shorts

Martin Johnson is the only player to captain England to a Rugby World Cup title as well as the only player to captain the British and Irish Lions on two occasions and it was on this day in rugby history in 1970 that the lock was born.

The accomplishments are even more unusual considering Johnson picked up the game relatively late in life. He played American football before getting involved in rugby after a coach saw his potential. He joined the Leicester Tigers in 1989 and helped the side win back-to-back Heineken Cup titles as well as six domestic titles.

Johnson earned 84 caps with England during his career. After hanging up his boots, Johnson moved to the sideline and without coaching experience was hired as the England coach in 2008. He resigned after the 2011 Rugby World Cup on November 16.
