The Welsh forwards were given the notorious nickname of the ‘Terrible Eights’ after Wales defeated Ireland 11-3 at the Balmoral Showgrounds in Belfast on this day in rugby history in 1914. The game was remembered as one of the most violent in international rugby history.
The visitors traveled to Belfast a day early and in an attempt to waste some time some of the Wales players including Percy Jones and Harry Uzzell went to the theater the evening before their match. They ran into several Irish players and a challenge was made that carried over to the match.

Wales tried to play a more open passing game early but with the muddy conditions it turned to a battle of the forwards and after the challenge the previous evening was marred with ongoing fist fights among the players.
