The final international test rugby match at the Kennington Oval took place on this day in rugby history in 1879 when England defeated Ireland 3-0 in front of 5,000 fans in that year’s Home Nations.

The Oval as it was called was designed to for cricket but hosted the seven England rugby international test matches between 1872 and 1879.
