Despite is small stature, Neil Back was an influential part of England 2003 Rugby World Cup winning side and played with three British and Irish Lions tours and it was on this day in 1969 that the flanker was born.
Back earned his first England cap in 1994 but did not get another call until 1997 in a round about process. Back was given a 6 month ban after pushing down referee Steve Lander in a Pilkington Cup final, claiming he thought Lander was a player from opposing Bath. He came back fitter and fresher and earned a call to the 1997 Lions tour of South Africa and impressed enough to become a part of Clive Woodward’s England side.

He combined with Richard Hill and Lawrence Dallaglio to form the ‘holy trinity’ on the way to the 2003 Rugby World Cup title. During the RWC, he played in 6 of the 7 matches and scored 2 tries.
The openside flanker played his entire club career with Leicester Tigers. During his tenure between 1990 and 2005 he helped the team to 2 Heineken Cup titles.
