The foundation for the Five Nations was laid on this day in rugby history in 1910 when Scotland and France met for the first time. Scotland easily won the match 27-0 at Inverleith.
Halfback James Tennent led the way for the home side with a hat-trick of tries in one of his two caps for the Scottish national team.

The game was more important than the final score as it solidified the foundation for the Five Nations tournament, now known as the Six Nations. France had played the other Home Nations – England in 1906, Wales in 1908, and Ireland in 1909. Prior to this match the competition was regional and called the Home Nations.
Scotland won that day in 1906 against France but it was not until 1920 that they won their first Five Nations title, sharing it with England and Wales, while France was forced to wait until 1954.
