Brive ran away with the Heineken Cup title after a 28-9 win over Leicester at Cardiff Arms Park on this day in rugby history in 1997. The 1996/07 tournament was the second edition of the European club competition and the first that included teams from England and Scotland.

The French side started fast with a 4th minute penalty and then an unconverted try two minutes later but Leicester kept it interesting hitting three penalties before the pressure of Brive paid off with 3 second half tries and a drop goal.

The match showed the growing interest in the European competition as the attendance of 41,664 was almost double the crowd of 21,800 at the previous final. And the 19 point margin of victory is still the largest in Heineken Cup history.
