February 21: Asian Five Nations Established

In an attempt to grow the sport in the region, the International Rugby Board (IRB) confirmed the establishment of the Asian Five Nations tournament on this day in rugby history in 2008. The annual tournament was scheduled to run in April and May.

The inaugural tournament was comprised of Japan, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Korea and the Arabian Gulf Rugby Team. The event is set up to help grow the game in the region so it is structured so that the last place team is relegated to the Division 1 competition.

Japan, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan have been selected for all the competitions. Japan is the traditional power in the tournament having won 4 titles through 2011.
