The 2007 Rugby World Cup kit, which includes a new lightweight, 'slimfit' jersey, advanced design and technologically enhanced shorts and socks, is the result of three years of development and testing by Canterbury designers in conjunction with Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.
"The jersey design caters for the needs of different player positions," said Canterbury MD Paul Zacks. "Design features include the placement of specific grips on the jersey to improve ball retention whilst running and to enhance binding in the scrum.
"The jersey features short and long sleeve options, as well as a cap sleeve version which has been developed specifically for the props to reduce manipulation by opposition props at the scrum. A new offset loop neck and slimfit design will help players evade collar and jersey tackles."
Other innovations include an underarm stretch panel for improved freedom of movement and a new super lightweight Temex® fabric that significantly reduces moisture retention and the weight of the jersey. The new-age fabric also wicks perspiration away from the skin to the jersey surface, preventing player overheating, discomfort and helping to maintain player performance.
A special feature is an embroidered image of the Webb Ellis Trophy with the numbers 1995 beneath it on the jersey's right arm sleeve, which has been approved by the International Rugby Board for all previous RWC winners.
The shorts have grip panels for line-out jumpers to aid lifting technique and also feature a slim design to prevent opposition interference during the line-out. In a revolutionary innovation unique to the Boks' Canterbury kit, there are grip handles on the shorts of the props and hooker that improves binding at the scrum. The shorts' lightweight material also provides greater agility, manoeuvrability and comfort.
The socks have an open weave structure that allows air and moisture to escape and provides greater comfort and functionality.
During the three-year development phase, the new kit was extensively tested in consultation with leading Springbok players, amongst them captain and hooker John Smit, lock Victor Matfield, centre Jean de Villiers, wing Bryan Habana and full-back Percy Montgomery. All aspects of the new kit were tested, including fabrics and design, with the players giving the new kit a unanimous stamp of approval.
"The players appreciate having being involved in the development phase," said Smit, who was present at Thursday's night launch at Canal Walk.
"It makes sense to test new developments with the athletes who are going to make use of the kit. The innovations that are used in the new Canterbury kit are fantastic and the players are excited about putting them to good use during the World Cup."
Andy Marinos, the SA Rugby Manager of National Teams, added: "The new Canterbury kit heralds a new era in rugby kit design. It is amazing to see the advances that have been made in ensuring that our players' very specific needs on the field are taken care of.
"The uniqueness of rugby and specific demands on players in the various positions has necessitated the introduction of custom-made kit. Canterbury has truly succeeded in achieving this and stands at the forefront of rugby kit innovation and technology."
