The Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso has thrown his support behind his countries bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Japan, who were overlooked in favour of New Zealand for the 2011 tournament, have launched bids to host both the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and their Prime Minister’s backing should now add even more momentum to their growing drive to host rugby’s premier event.
England, South Africa, Italy and Australia have all also submitted bids to host the showpiece event but Japan is believed to be one of the favourites, possibly alongside England.
Japan Rugby Football Union president, Yoshiro Mori, himself a former National Prime Minister, has welcomed the support of Aso.
"The support of the government and Japan's financial circle is a big step forward," said Mori to Reuters.
"We are confident."
